I was not sure what to expect going into this show (were they just in it for the money?) but obviously I had to take the chance since I was in Chicago at the same time Public Image Ltd. was playing at the Concord Music Hall. The current lineup consists of John Lydon (PiL, Sex Pistols), guitarist Lu Edmonds (Damned, Mekons, Shriekback, Billy Bragg & the Blokes), drummer Bruce Smith (The Pop Group, Slits) & bassist Scott Firth. Bad Luck Jonathan opened up the evening warming up with a strong set. PiL followed with a tight and very loud mix of songs from the new album as well as classic hits. Religion was the highlight of the night delivered as one long crescendo with Lydon calling for more bass and Scott Firth answering, louder, more powerful, until the sound waves were pulsating through the flesh and it felt the like the cement floor was vibrating. They played for almost 2 hours and delivered far above my earlier expectations. At the end of show John gave a very heartfelt thanks to the crowd looking visibly moved as he left the stage. He gave it his all and it was very much appreciated.
