The “On the Road” app directed me to Brenda’s French Soul Food In San Francisco where her BFC Fried Chicken was featured on The Best Thing I Ever Ate. I easily decided on one of the daily specials, Crawfish and Andouille Pot Pie. The topping was not your traditional pie topping but a biscuit smothers in melted cheddar cheese. I started out with the Chicken, Andouille and Okra Gumbo. The roux was perfect and was as good as anything I had when I lived in Lafayette, LA.
I was offered the watermelon sweet tea and I said, “Sure!” This was the first time I had ever had watermelon in tea. There were slivers and pulp in the tea that infused the whole thing with watermelon flavor. I definitely plan to make some of this during the summer. There were several different takes on the beignet available for dessert (or solo with a cup of Community Coffee. I ordered the one filled with Granny Smith apples.
It was different from the traditional Cafe Du Monde beignet, but delicious nonetheless. It reminded me of a certain fast food apple pie from a flavor perspective but far more superior with its light flaky interior. If you are going with a group for lunch get there early, but if you are solo, there is quick access at a ledge with stools.
Later that day I stopped into one of my favorite San Francisco watering holes, Palomino for a Giant’s BBQ Burger and a Speakeasy Prohibition Ale. It’s a great place to sit on the patio with a mix of people rolling in after work (it was a regular post Schwab stop for me) and tourists taking in the view.
