The Savages performed a 9 night sold out residency in New York City during the month of January where they worked out material for their next album. I attended the 5th night at the Mercury Lounge with Johnny Hostile opening (co-founder of Pop Noire Records with Jehnny Beth). I first saw Savages on Later with Jools Holland and added them to the must see live list. To say this was one of the more emotionally intense and powerful shows I have seen in awhile is an understatement. The band effortlessly brings a post punk wall of sound delivered by guitarist Gemma Thompson, bassist Ayse Hassan and drummer Fay Milton punctuated by Jehnny Beth’s vocal. There are many comparisons to Ian Curtis and Siouxsie Sioux and while well deserved, Savages are a phenomena unto their own. I am looking forward to the new album and they have set the show bar high for the rest of 2015. Color photo set located here.
