When the track came on KRCL 90.9‘s (@KRCLRadio) Good Morning Show with Ebay Jamil Hamilton (@ebayjamil) this morning I thought someone was covering Movement era New Order or maybe Hooky had reconciled and they were back together. It was the new single, “The Writings On the Wall,” from OK Go’s forthcoming October release. The accompanying video is a great optical illusion and will certainly drive a lot of views. The song stuck in my head and as the day progressed I figured out why. It had an eerily similar chorus and bass line as one of my favorite NO songs, Temptation. Intrigued that OK Go may have moved in a new direction I checked out the rest of the EP. Unfortunately I found nothing else compelling so for now one OK Go song gets added to the rotation.
I saw OK Go by chance at Saltair in Salt Lake City in 2007 in between the Silversun Pickups and Snow Patrol. Silversun Pickups should have been the headliner as they were the highlight of the evening. After the OK Go set and the first few Snow Patrol songs we left to beat the Grey’s Anatomy crowd out of Saltair. For anyone that has been to a show there you know it takes a long time to leave. Early versions of Snow Patrol and OK Go had a lot more punch which has clearly shifted to a more Top 40 friendly sound. I am sure I’ll hear more OK Go when my 12 year old daughter has control of the radio dial in the car.
